Wickham Breaks Game Six
Stalemate, Clinches Series With Dramatic Walk-off
James Wickham, more
commonly known as Monu, has had a lot of demons to overcome since joining Major League Yardball in 1998. Wickham is regarded by most analysts as being one of league’s weaker hitters and in past seasons
his role as pitcher was often reduced to someone who came in to sustain verticality when the game was beyond salvation. However, on a chilly 26 degree Sunday night in the MLY Championship Series, Wickham
sent a loud and clear message to those who have doubted his abilities in years past.
With his team bound in
a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the sixth inning in game six and with one out, Wickham hit the first pitch he saw from opposing
pitcher Mike Jones deep into the darkness beyond the Brown Stadium left field wall, instantly erasing the previously miserable
0-7 night he had at the plate. Wickham’s two-run walk off homerun was arguably
his biggest hit of the year, but Wickham had several other timely homeruns throughout the series along with several impressive
and pivotal defensive plays.
The Yellow Fighting Banana
Slugs broke a scoreless tie to go up 1-0 on an Andy Taylor solo homerun into the frozen lake in the fourth inning. Behind Shawn Brown’s pitching, the single run looked as thought it may once again hold up. However, in the top of the sixth, Big Black’s Phil Bradley tied the game with a one out solo homerun
that just cleared the 8 foot wall in left center. The Blacks, had the next two
batters reach on a single and double to put runners at 2nd and 3rd with one out, but after a fine defensive snag on a line
drive by Brown off the bat of Bradley, Brown got Jones to strike out and end the threat, which would turn out to be quite
significant in the wake of Wickham’s homerun in the following half inning.
For the Yellows, it was
a sweet moment to finally win the Jeff Young Trophy, a prize that many on the team felt was robbed from them in 2005.
“We had lots of
problems last year starting on time and they (Big Blacks) hit us with some shady calls in a few big games. It just seemed like we didn’t get a fair shake last year in this thing. I think we knew we could win this last year, but it feels good to win it tonight,” said Yellow Manager
Andy Taylor.
Shawn Brown was named
as the 2006 MLYCS MVP, retaining the title won last year. Brown was undefeated
in the CS allowing just four runs in 18 innings pitched, while tallying 35 strikeouts.
In addition, Brown batted a monstrous .391 for his team.
This year’s
MLYCS was the first to be played entirely at night under artificial lighting. Moreover,
this year’s CS was the longest in league history, concluding almost seven full months after the 2006 season began.

Early Runs lead to Game 5 rout
The temp was in the upper 20s, but you couldn't tell in the first two innings with the hot
bats of team Black as they kept the series alive with an 8-3 victory. Bud Clark had two first inning homeruns as part
of a six run first inning. Phil Bradley added a two run homerun in the second to cap the scoring for the Blacks.
Andy Taylor belted a two run homerun in the fourth to put the Yellow's on the board and Monu Wickham added a solo shot in
the fifth. Clark threw well in game 5 allowing just 3 runs and striking out 10. Taylor settled down after the
first two innings but still had problems with 5 walks and 12 hits allowed.

In game one, despite strong early
pitching from Bud Clark and productive hitting from Phil Bradley and Mike Jones, Team Black saw an early three run lead
evaporate over four innings thanks, in large part, to two timely homeruns from James “Monu” Wickham whose two-run
homer in the bottom of the fourth inning tied the game at three and whose solo homer in the fifth inning again tied the
game at four all. You can listen to Wickham comment on his hitting performance
here.
Team yellow would win in the
bottom of the sixth when, with runners on second and third and two outs, Mike Jones fielded a ground ball and proceeded to
tag third base mistakenly thinking it was a force out situation. Not tagging
Wickham allowed him to reach third safely and allowed Shawn Brown to score from third to end the game at 5-4.
