Clark
Returns to Roots for 09' Season, But for How Long?
Bud Clark
has settled into many different places over the past few years, effectively ending his wiffle ball career each time. However, Sunday afternoon at Brown Stadium, Clark found himself once again settling into an old familiar stomping ground: the pitchers
mound, as he pitched several innings of a split-squad preseason game. Last year Clark moved from Las Vegas
to Traverse City, Michigan, but recently moved back to the
Bay City area. Clark was
rusty, allowing eight runs in three full innings of work (both halves), but had a better day at the plate hitting three homeruns
and driving in four runs.
The hope this year
is that the league will see an increase in the number of games played. The return of Clark and an enthusiastic preseason were steps in the right direction, but the league has
been here before only to see mid and late season participation drop off.
“We’re going
to try hard to accommodate schedules. We saw what it was like last year not playing
and it wasn’t a good feeling,” said MLY Commissioner Andy Taylor.
Last year the league played
a total of three games, including Opening Day. Last year marked the first time
an MLYCS was not completed since 1998 and no Wheeling Series was held since the series began in 2000. The league is hoping
to bring in new talent from the ranks of Mott Community College to cover in times when one of several players cannot play. “It’s down to relying on one guy showing up to play.
It’s better have more options than that,” said Shawn Brown, Mott CC’s men’s baseball coach.
Discussions are still
ongoing within the MLY commission about Opening Day’s location—traditionally held at Bradley Park, which is now
closed. The park may be reopened for Opening Day, which will also serve at the
farewell game that was not held at the park last year. After Opening Day, all
games will be scheduled for Brown Stadium, which was recently updated with improved night lighting. Opening Day is tentative set for the first week of June, a full two months later than previous years.

Trumps Clark in Close Game
Andy Taylor settled
in nicely Saturday afternoon at Brown Stadium after some early hiccups as his team of Phil Bradley, Shawn Brown and Monu Wickham
edged past Bud Clark, Mike Jones and Jake “Vic” Colfari by the score
of 3-2. Team Clark started the scoring off with
a two-run homerun by Mike Jones in the top of the second inning. The score would
remain 2-0 until the bottom of the fourth when Monu Wickham hit a two-run shot of his own to tie the game at 2-2. Later in the bottom of the fifth, Phil Bradley’s solo homerun would put his team ahead for good as
Taylor continued to cruise, closing out the sixth inning.

More Than Stuffing Served Up in Turkey Day Game
There was no shortage
of homeruns Thursday at Brown Stadium as Major League Yardball held its first annual Turkey Day Game. Andy Taylor, James
“Perfect Game” Wickham and Clark played to an eight-eight tie with Shawn Brown, Phil Bradley and Mike Jones
before an estimated crowd of 40,000 who turned out in droves to enjoy the unseasonably warm weather. One fan commented, “Al Gore can eat an ass, global warming is awesome!”
The proceeds of
the game went to benefit victims of previous MLY scams, schemes and gimmicks at Brown Stadium, including “Felons Drink
Free Night” and “Bag-o-glass Night” in which all fans received a free bag of broken glass.
Since the game was not official each player had to pitch two innings and it was of no issue that the game ended tied. Andy Taylor led the charge at the plate hitting four homeruns and driving in seven
runs. Shawn Brown was perfect in his two innings on the hill not allowing a runner
to reach base while fanning four, while hitting three homeruns, all off Taylor, including a two run homerun with two outs
in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game, a homerun that Taylor called before the at-bat.
Big Blast at The Brown
Wickham Breaks Game Six
Stalemate, Clinches Series With Dramatic Walk-off
James Wickham, more
commonly known as Monu, has had a lot of demons to overcome since joining Major League Yardball in 1998. Wickham is regarded by most analysts as being one of league’s weaker hitters and in past seasons
his role as pitcher was often reduced to someone who came in to sustain verticality when the game was beyond salvation. However, on a chilly 26 degree Sunday night in the MLY Championship Series, Wickham
sent a loud and clear message to those who have doubted his abilities in years past.
With his team bound in
a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the sixth inning in game six and with one out, Wickham hit the first pitch he saw from opposing
pitcher Mike Jones deep into the darkness beyond the Brown Stadium left field wall, instantly erasing the previously miserable
0-7 night he had at the plate. Wickham’s two-run walk off homerun was arguably
his biggest hit of the year, but Wickham had several other timely homeruns throughout the series along with several impressive
and pivotal defensive plays.
The Yellow Fighting Banana
Slugs broke a scoreless tie to go up 1-0 on an Andy Taylor solo homerun into the frozen lake in the fourth inning. Behind Shawn Brown’s pitching, the single run looked as thought it may once again hold up. However, in the top of the sixth, Big Black’s Phil Bradley tied the game with a one out solo homerun
that just cleared the 8 foot wall in left center. The Blacks, who cruised to
an 8-3 win in game five, had the next two batters reach on a single and double to put runners at 2nd and 3rd with one out,
but after a fine defensive snag on a line drive by Brown off the bat of Bradley, Brown got Jones to strike out and end the
threat, which would turn out to be quite significant in the wake of Wickham’s homerun in the following half inning.
For the Yellows, it was
a sweet moment to finally win the Jeff Young Trophy, a prize that many on the team felt was robbed from them in 2005.
“We had lots of
problems last year starting on time and they (Big Blacks) hit us with some shady calls in a few big games. It just seemed like we didn’t get a fair shake last year in this thing. I think we knew we could win this last year, but it feels good to win it tonight,” said Yellow Manager
Andy Taylor.
Shawn Brown was named
as the 2006 MLYCS MVP, retaining the title won last year. Brown was undefeated
in the CS allowing just four runs in 18 innings pitched, while tallying 35 strikeouts.
In addition, Brown batted a monstrous .391 for his team.
This year’s
MLYCS was the first to be played entirely at night under artificial lighting. Moreover,
this year’s CS was the longest in league history, concluding almost seven full months after the 2006 season began.
More awards from the 06
CS will be announced in the coming days, along with more pictures and video.
